Park Min-young Shines in a Stylish Heist Drama with Dark Twists and High Stakes: Confidence Queen Episodes 1 & 2 Review

Posted on September 9, 2025September 9, 2025 by RB

The drama wastes no time in throwing us into the glamorous, high-stakes world of cons. Yun Yi-rang, played by Park Min-young, is introduced as a cunning and confident swindler who thrives on control and precision. She doesn’t just plan heists—she stages them like theatrical performances, complete with disguises, fake identities, and layered misdirection. Her crew is small but effective: James, a seasoned con man whose experience balances Yi-rang’s boldness, and Gu-ho, the rookie with a bright heart and big dreams but not enough street smarts—yet.

Episode 1

The first act feels lighthearted, almost comedic, as the trio dupes wealthy but corrupt figures with flair and humor. Just when it seems like the show will lean into pure caper fun, everything takes a darker turn. Their latest moves draw the attention of Jeon Tae-su, a ruthless underworld figure tied to political powers. What began as a dazzling con suddenly shifts into a deadly game of survival. The stakes rise beyond money or reputation, forcing the crew into dangerous territory.

The premiere works so well because of its bold, stylish direction. Each con feels like a stage play, filled with sharp editing, sleek music, and costume changes that keep the viewer entertained. Park Min-young commands the screen with charisma, intellect, and just enough mystery to make audiences wonder about Yi-rang’s true motives. The shift from playful trickery to life-or-death suspense creates a jolt that leaves a strong impression, even if the pacing sacrifices deeper character backstory. For some, the abrupt tonal swing might feel uneven, but it undeniably sets the stage for a layered series.

Episode 2

The second episode builds directly on this tension. With Tae-su’s shadow looming larger, the crew takes on a far riskier con. Unlike the lighter scams of the pilot, this scheme demands flawless execution and absolute trust within the team. Yi-rang proves she is both ruthless and resourceful, orchestrating multi-layered deceptions that keep her enemies scrambling. James shows a more complex side, hinting at a moral compass shaped by years of straddling the line between greed and survival. Meanwhile, Gu-ho’s innocence becomes both his strength and his weakness—his sincerity adds humanity to the team but also exposes their vulnerabilities.

As the net tightens, the suspense becomes less about whether the scam will succeed and more about whether the crew will escape intact. The tension is genuine, and the danger feels real. Episode 2 succeeds because it balances playful trickery with looming threat, grounding the story in stakes that extend beyond clever reveals. The trio’s chemistry also deepens: Yi-rang’s icy brilliance, James’ pragmatic wisdom, and Gu-ho’s wide-eyed sincerity create a dynamic that’s both engaging and emotionally resonant.

Performances & characters

Park Min-young (Yun Yi-rang): Charismatic, calculating, and perfectly tailored for a role that spotlights wit over romance.

Park Hee-soon (James): The veteran with gravitas, adding depth and world-weariness to the team.

Joo Jong-hyuk (Myung Gu-ho): The rookie heart of the group, whose earnestness brings humor and humanity.

Costumes, set pieces, and the energetic soundtrack further elevate the vibe — making every con look like a carefully staged drama within the drama.

By the end of the second episode, it’s clear that Confidence Queen isn’t just a glossy con drama. It’s a story about loyalty, survival, and the heavy personal cost of living in a world built on lies. The fun of the scams remains, but the consequences hit harder, leaving viewers eager to see how far these characters are willing to go in their pursuit of both justice and survival.
